Congratulations to Woolton JFC for winning the G. Hampson Cup Final.

Woolton FC won an exciting match against Rainhill Rockets in the G Hampson U16 Cup. The first half was a tight affair with Rainhill Rockets causing problems from long throw-ins but the Woolton defence held firm. A major turning point of the game occurred after around 30 minutes when a Rainhill defender was red-carded after committing a foul as last man and preventing a clear goal-scoring opportunity for Woolton forward Chris Lewtas. Shortly afterwards Woolton took the lead when Lee Doyle struck a sweet half-volley from outside the penalty area low past the Rainhill keeper. Half-time Woolton 1 , Rainhill 0.
With ten-men Rainhill came out in the second half and again put Woolton under pressure with the Woolton goalkeeper Mathew Kinsella making some vital saves. Both teams played some good football with chances at either end. With the game drawing to a close, Chris English closed down a Rainhill defender whose clearance rebounded off him to Jordan Ashcroft who rounded the Rainhill keeper to slot the second goal and secure victory. Man-of-the-match for Woolton was central defender Mark McKenna. Full-time : Woolton 2, Rainhill 0.
