Worle Juniors 1 St George EinG 3
Worle Juniors 1 - 3 St Georges EinG
An absolute fantastic performance by the lads today in very hot conditions against last years Div 3 Champions who are now in Div 2 St George's EinG.
John Major was referring the game today and what a tremendous job he did again today.
Right from the start the lads seemed to be switched on and up for the game, which really shows in the performance on the pitch. The had 2 players that have previously caused us problems and they need to be picked up for us to stand any chance in the match. Nathan Collier was outstanding at right back today, his first game this season due to a leg infection. He was tracking back, keeping tabs on their No 20 and putting in some storming tackles. Aaron Lawrence was doing likewise on the left and he is just getting better and better in every game. With Callum and Connor completing the back line and watching the ball from the goal kicks/clearances, St George's were finding it difficult to get a foot hold in the game. The busier keeper for much of the match was the St George's keeper who was excellent, alert and on his toes, chasing to the ball as soon as it passed his defenders (same required from you Sam please!!)
It took till 19 mins for St George's to break down the left with their most dangerous player, who cut in laid the ball off and 1 - 0. If only we tracked the runners!! 5 mins later 2 - 0 with a similar error!!!!
Credit to the boys they kept going in the heat. Lucas collected the ball inside our half and went on one of his fantastic runs past player after player and slotted the ball cooly into the bottom right hand side of the net, 2 - 1 at the break.
Plenty of fluids taken on and plenty of positives.
One change at the half with Coggy (yesterday's birthday boy) in his new boots replacing Hugh. The 2nd half was a very tight affair, but again their keeper was the busier and the ball just would not break kindly for the equalizer. Alex Young took one for the team as he took a hit in his stomach, which winded him. Further subs as Mitch replaced Nathan Collier, Josh Makin replaced Connor and Thomas coming on for Tom Stephens. The spirit and fight from the lads could not be faulted. Lucas committed a couple of fouls throws and was then taken out by a St George's player. Lucas questioned the Ref about the tackle, as I told him to keep quiet The Ref called back the offender and gave him a talking to. Then our chance of the match from a goalmouth scramble. We thought we had it as the ball pinged around in the area but we could not just get that vital touch as the St George's keeper scooped it up.
Right at the end of the game St George's broke and were 1 v 1 at the back with Callum. Callum played the player and not the ball and went in the book for a yellow and a £10 fine from the league. I won't critise Callum as he knew what he was doing, if they'd have got through it could have been 3 - 1 and game over. As it was from the freed kick, Sam got his hand to it, pushed it onto the bar and we could not clear it as they scored. Final score 1 - 3.
Again we were complimented by the Ref on the massive strides we have taken since last season when we lost 15 - 1 to St George in the cup.
