KING GEORGE REIGN SUPREME AS CROFTON COLTS LOSE THEIR WINNING SPURS IN UNLUCKY GAME NUMBER 13.
Wakefield & District Sunday Football League - Sunday 14th April
Crofton Colts ........................................ 0
King George ......................................... 3
King George gave a masterful performance to retain the Premiership Trophy and deny Crofton Colts becoming the first-ever lower tier side to win a treble.
The Crofton outfit suffered their first defeat following a run of 12 consecutive wins and failed to score for the first time in their 25th outing this season.
The experienced King George side made a positive start with the midfield quartet of Tom Whitworth, Lee Watson, Lee Pashley, and Neil Samardzija pulling the strings before the breakthrough in the 26th minute when a mis-headed clearance fell at the feet of striker Joe Turfrey who fired home with a low effort for a desrved 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, the Eastmoor outfit doubled their tally when a teasing cross from the left flank by Joe Turfery saw Lee Pashley challenge for the ball in the air under pressure from the Crofton Colts goalkeeper George Bason. The loose ball fell in the path of Lee Watson who showed some nimble footwork beating his marker with ease before steering the ball on target to make it 2-0.
Crofton forced the play to gain some ground into the game and saw their striker Adam Swift go close with an acrobatic bicycle-kick effort from close range and saw another chance go begging on the stroke of half time when an Adam Swift headed effort forced an excellent save from King George goalkeeper Nigel Waite.
The second period was a much open affair with Ben McAdam and Adam Swift asking question of the King George custodian while at the other end Josh Buxton was proving to be an aerial master denying the King George from set pieces into their box.
The game became alive again in the 70th minute when an excellent through ball from Devan McIntosh sent Lee Watson clear before being upended at the expense of a penalty which was blasted wide by substitute striker Danny Critchlow. However, five minutes later, Critchlow made amends with an excellent defence splitting pass which saw Devan McIntosh break clear of the Crofton Colts high line before making it 3-0 with a low finish.
The President’s Trophy was presented to the King George captain, David Stewart, by the Secretary of the Wakefield & District Sunday Football League, Tony Driver.
The man of the match award, sponsored by Pennine Trophies and the Match ball, sponsored by Kings Head (Pollington) went to King George central defender, Joe Campbell.
