A Tale of Two Fixtures

As you are all aware (and certainly as my wife and kids are aware … sadly for them), I have a fascination for World Cup ephemera and apocrypha. One of the intriguing bits of World Cup history concerns Scotland’s World Cup efforts of 1978.

Beyond the fact that Ally McLeod actually believed that Scotland were in with a chance of winning the thing, and beyond the stories of Scotsmen arriving in Argentina by submarine and tractor ( all of these things perhaps being improbable at best ) was the team’s record. Famously they “lost the one they should have drawn, drew the one they should have won and won the one they should have lost”.
Looking at the Harriers last two games and the results that happened, the uninitiated might venture a similar opinion, that we drew the one we might have won and won the one we might have drawn ( or lost ).
That doesn’t really tell the true story though, does it?.

Breaks between games don’t tend to suit us. We were almost a month on from the game against Haslemere but Nev, Bryan and Neil were determined to make sure that we’d hit the ground running. The weather was dreadful and just cleared up enough for the Harriers to start the game with a hiss and a roar, but sadly no goals.
Rushmoor became more and more emboldened and went ahead with a bit of a wonder strike from the edge of the box. This wasn’t in the script. I’m sure that Bruce Rioch said the same thing when Iran scored first in 1978.

A bit of a re-shuffle later and the Harriers were ready to push for the summit (or at least try and make third safe).

Rushmoor really had the wind in their sails, however, and doubled their lead. Harriers were now a prized scalp and Rushmoor scented a famous victory. That must be a record for clichés in a sentence.

There may have been a time in previous seasons where such a shock may have induced something approaching paralysis, but not this season. There were still lofty positions in the table to be fought for and the Harriers were going to do all they could to get back into the game and ( hopefully ) win it. A free kick from Noah looked destined to fly over the keepers head and in but sadly came back off the bar. At least we were finding our range. And soon enough the first goal.

Our set pieces had been excellent ( if unrewarded ) and finally Noah and Joe combined to excellent effect. Joe’s corner was superb and superbly met by Noah. This led to further attacks. Soon enough a Charlie Morris pass was well converted again by Noah ( who was the width of a bar away from his hat-trick ).
Yet more attacks on the Rushmoor goal but a combination of an excellent keeper and the unkind bounce of the ball meant that the game ended 2-2.
Well done to Joe for his MOM performance driving the team on and well done Max I for the trainer of the week.

But two dropped points…….??

The boys wouldn’t have time to think about what might have been because Tuesday night brought the next ( and final ) fixture…..
