Gary Hillard, crucial strike for Broadhall Reserves...

Sunday's League round-up...

New manager Chris Day’s recent Boro fortunes rubbed off and inspired AFC Crooked Billet to an excellent win over Broadhall as they avoided relegation in Division One. They started the game at blistering pace and a long throw-in was directed home by Steve Harris. A similar goal after ten minutes saw Martin Barrett flick on for Michael Gwilliam to poke home. The goal that sealed it came before the half-hour mark when a through-ball by Mark Montague set Gwilliam free, who chipped the ball over him from twenty yards. The clean sheet meant the back five’s first pint at the pub were on “Daisy”.

Highview beat Putterills thanks to John Vooght (two) and Nick Wellings (two). Dave Banks replied.

MBDA won despite a gallant effort from a nine-man Times Club. Phil Fisher’s rasping finish was all they could muster early on and it was more than Times deserved when Karl Rickaby hit a dipping volley over Andy Gibb to equalise before the break. Kyle Watson and Gary Hodgson did win the points for MBDA.

Si Longman (two), Paul Tully and a Greg Bradbury penalty saw A1 Trophies share the spoils with Fox. The response came from Jason Smith (two), Ryan Palmer and Theo Griffith.

Andy Parrish, Adrian Wenn and Nath Bowden netted as Hartham Press won by the odd goal in five against Old Town Wetherspoons.

Division Three action saw Broadhall Reserves move a step closer to the title with a narrow win over Stevenage Colts Old Boys Reserves on Sunday to avenge last season’s Division Four Cup Final defeat. Gary Hillard and Steve Fahey were on target, Colts’ repost came from James French.

With the Division Four title already over, promotion places were up for grabs. Broadhall 'A' crowned a fantastic first season at adult level by clinching the runners-up spot. Another blistering first-half performance had the game sewn up very early, Michael Emmings' opportunist strike after thirty-two seconds set the tone. Ten minutes in, Rob Stevenson’s free-kick found the net from forty-five yards out. The game was effectively over inside fifteen minutes when Emmings set up Jon Myers for a close-range finish. Half-hour in saw Paul Hancock unselfishly set up Phil Stevens and number five came before the break when Emmings converted a penalty. Crooked Billet Boro never gave up and it took two unbelievable saves from Broadhall ‘keeper Will Harris to keep the clean sheet intact. The final goal was a fine solo run and finish from Hancock.

There was cup action on Sunday, Bedwell Athletic once again conceded to hand Unity Nirankari a semi-final spot in the Premier Division Cup.

There was a classic game in the semi-final and Dun Cow took an early lead when Lee Wilson was left unmarked from a corner. Probuild levelled shortly after when Liam Castle smashed in his first goal of the season. They turned it around thanks to Tel Pateman’s goal before the break. Cow levelled the scores again after a scramble in the area culminated with Marc Holmes’ shot just crossing over the line. Arin Fehmi looked to have won it, but with Cow dominating the last five minutes in search of an equaliser, Wilson headed home whilst unmarked again to force extra-time. It was to be a couple of kicks from twelve yards which decided the tie. Probuild striker Rich Hall was clambered on in the area and Kaan Fehmi coolly slotted home before brother Arin was brought down in the box and Kaan netted again past Wayne Simpson. Ryan Skeggs compounded Cow’s miserable week when he was sent off with five minutes to go.

Dun Cow Reserves are on course for ‘the double’ as they hammered Shephall Artois in the Division One Cup semi-final. Pete Brewster (hat-trick), Danny Huggins, James Dillnutt, Mark Phillips and Danny McIver netted. Colin Field replied.

Stevenage Fencing made the Division Two Cup Final after a comfortable win over Stevenage Leisure Ltd. Craig Gilbert (two) and Joe Delasalle were on the mark.

There were real fireworks in the Division Three Cup. Chequers upset SCS in a ten-goal-thriller. Garry Gibson (two), Carl Thompson (two), Marcus Norton and John Mikiel struck as they made the final. Chris Lyle, Dean Chadderton, Aaron Reed and Jonros Perren replied.

Mallard Old Boys went ahead thanks to a close-range shot from Si Jervis, then doubled their lead shortly after from Jamie Campany headed in a well worked free-kick. Emperors Head pulled one back five minutes before half-time when a Damian Hadlow corner saw Lewis Sealy half-volley home. Shortly after the break, Sealy did it again to level the scores, before the Old Boys’ day got worse when Sean Lamacraft was sent-off for dissent to the linesman. The remarkable comeback was complete with twenty-five minutes left when Gareth Lewis worked hard to chase the ball down and win it back before striking the ball from thirty-five yards. It took a couple of deflections on the way to goal and flew over the diving Ian Mann to put them through.

The Division Four Cup had a topsy-turvy week. Fairlands were unable to field a side in the quarter-final tie, so AFC Chells received a bye. The semi-final was immediately set-up, but as AFC Chells were suspended by the Herts FA so Highwayman received a bye straight into the final!

Coopers look to have set up an intriguing final as they comfortably beat White Lion Walkern. Gary Chambers (two), Dan Auld, Graeme Kear, Adam Stevens and an own goal saw the champions through. Marc Stobart’s brace was consolation.
