CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
WEEKLY REPORT W/E 23RD APRIL
The race for the Carlsberg West Cheshire League title is set to go to the wire following wins for West Kirby and Maghull on Saturday. The Seasiders will hold a one point advantage as the two protagonists clash at Maghull on Wednesday [6.45 p.m.] in the most significant clash of the season. Paul Casey converted two penalties and Dave Forbes also found the net as West Kirby overcame Marine Reserves [Paul Pearson] 3-1 at the weekend. For their part Maghull had Brad Smart and Tom Foley on target as they defeated visiting Ellesmere Port 2-0. Although out of the title race Helsby are battling hard to claim 3rd spot and an Adam Newbolt treble spearheaded their 5-2 victory over Marshalls which followed a 1-1 draw at Vauxhall Motors Reserves earlier in the week. Pyke Cup finalists Newton completed their league programme when Lee Furlong, Nathan Mapletoft and Paul Robinson all found the net in their 3-0 success over basement boys Blacon YC. Another Chester side tasting defeat were Upton AA [Sean Finch, Richard Smart] who went down 4-2 at Southport Trinity [Matthew McKeown, Colin McDonald, Ian Morrison, Carl Ennis]. Willaston lifted themselves above opponents Cammell Laird Reserves in the table after goals from Paul Ellison, Josh Williams and James Jaggard earned them a 3-0 victory.
There was disappointment for West Kirby when representing Cheshire FA on Wednesday as they went down to a 4-1 reversal at the hands of Lancashire FAs Wren Rovers in the final of the Northern Counties Championships. Coming from 2-0 down a Kieran Fleetwood penalty spurred Kirby into a series of attacks only for a 2nd controversial Rovers goal to end their hopes with their opponents adding a 4th with the last kick of the game.
Chester Nomads secured promotion to Division 1 following Mondays 3-0 defeat of Bronze Social but were on the wrong end of a 4-0 score line on Saturday at Richmond Raith Rovers who registered through Jamie English, 2, Paul Gouthwaite and Brad Thompson. Champions Ashville suffered their 2nd defeat of the campaign in midweek when going down 2-1 at home to 3rd placed Mossley Hill Athletic while on Saturday Capenhurst Villa [Rob Hartley,2, Luke Eccles] got the better of Hale [Phil Doran, Brad Williams] by the odd goal in 5. Heswall Reserves continued their climb up the table when Julian Pepper, 2, Matt Holt and Dave Swaine were all on target in the 4-0 victory over Beb Athletic.
Ashville Reserves grabbed the 3rd promotion spot from Division 3 with an emphatic 5-2 win over Helsby Reserves. Kyle Kelly, Danny Povall, Chris Black, Paul Howell and Dave Hay were the men on the mark for Ashville with Ian Cox posting twice for Helsby. Top marksman of the day was Aaron Woods who netted 4 times as New Brighton Reserves mauled Christleton Reserves 9-2 while champion side Runcorn Linnets Reserves had 2 goal men in Ryan Smith and Ryan Meyers in their 7-0 rout of Ellesmere Port Reserves. Second placed Manor Athletic [Chris Tolley, Adam Johnson] edged out Mossley Hill Athletic Reserves [Alan Jordan] 2-1.
The top two in the Youth Division recorded impressive victories with Maghull [Mike Cummins,2, Jordan Lorde,2, Thomas Jump] defeating Helsby [Jack Wignall, Mike Whitehead] 5-2 while Thomas James, Andy Bird and Connor OShea each bagged a brace as Halewood Town overcame lowly Neston Nomads 10-0. In midweek Halewood had enjoyed a 4-0 victory at Mayfield.
