Peter Raynbird reviews Hampshire and North Hants Cup Ties
The second round of the Hampshire A and B Cups should have been decided three weeks ago, but due to the bad weather it has taken until last Saturday to see who made it through to the third round. Basingstoke Labour Club played their outstanding match against Brading Town Reserves after the match was moved to Basingstoke following two postponements on the Island and they won 3-1. . Their main marksman Cameron George set them on the winning run of six matches with the opening goal in the 25th minute with a wind assisted volley following a move by Marik Wisnienski. Although the Islanders managed to level, Matt Kelly regained the advantage before half tome, with George the provider. A corner taken by Mark Thorpe found the head of Kelly to increase the lead and even though Labour had most of the play, the nearest to a fourth came when George hit the bar. They now face a trip to Ryde Saints in the next stage.
DJS Telecoms will join them in the next round after a very easy 7-1 over another Island team Sandown Reserves at Silchester Common. DJS have not played for a month but were soon off the mark when Ashley Elward took a pass from Lee Neal to open the scoring and by the eighth they were two ahead, when Elward handed Neal his chance.
Sandown made it 2-1 in the 16th minute, but Jason Freathey scored from a penalty after Nick Saunders was floored and DJS then went on the rampage to build up a 6-1 lead by he interval. The goals came from Chris Payne, Allan Morgan and Neal. In the 62nd Dan Deadman chipped the 63 years old Sandown keeper who went on to make four one on one saves from Neal as DJS dominated play for the remainder of the game. They now play Cowes Sports on the Isle of Wight..
In the Hants B Cup, the twice postponed matches Tron FC and Winklebury Wizards were involved in against outside opposition, was not played, but this time because the opposition could not raise team. They will both now receive a walkover into the third round.
North Hants May Cup
Tadley Calleva A move through to the last eight of the North Hants May Cup after beating their Andover League opponents Kingsclere 4-3 at Barlow’s Park.
They found themselves a goal down after eight minutes, but hit back in the 29th after a shot by Ben Todd was parried by the keeper and Simon Penfold followed up to score. Lee Calcott came up with a volley following a Dan Walkley corner hick to increase the lead and by half time Todd put away the third from a Lee Champion long throw and Penfold scored his second to make it 4-1. Kingsclere had more of the game after this and soon pulled it back to 4-2 and with ten minutes left a penalty conceded by Barry Stafford was converted to give the visitors hope, but Tadley held firm for the remaining minutes.
Hook and Twentyten had a battle at Preston Candover where it ended 1-1 at 90 minutes and Hook won through after a penalty shootout 4-2. The Twentyen manager Alan Spacagna said after the game, I felt we did enough to win and the own goal was unfortunate, but their experienced players looked more confident in the shootout. A foul by Josh Martin on Joe Osborne handed Twentyten a penalty and Joe Hill made no mistake from the spot. They held this lead until well into the second half and then it took an own to see Hook level. A corner by Pete Silvester was flicked on by Dave Rees and the Twentyten full back Charlie Hill headed into his own goal in trying to clear. In the shootout, for Hook Jack McKee missed and Silvester, Dave Mellors, Aaron King and Andy Parker all converted and the opposition failed, with one wide and another hit the bar.
Both Overton United teams are through. The A team played Division two AFC Aldermaston A and won 3-1. Terry Lock scored the opening two goals, the second following a superb pass from Jamal Rose. Aldermaston came back strongly in the second half and Kevin Flain volleyed home after a corner by Ashley Jones was no cleared well. Overton made the game safe with Phil Eves scoring on a breakaway.
Overton United B joined their A team in the last eight after a surprising 5-1 win against Bounty United away. They went 2-0 up in the first fifteen minutes, goals from Rob Perrett and Paul Eldridge. Although Mitchell Stokes replied for Bounty by half time Overton had regained their two goal advantage when Perrett scored again. There was another blow for Bounty when their goalkeeper Symon Duszynski was sent off for bringing down Perritt in the box, a clear goal scoring opportunity, so he had to go. Substitute John Spencer took over, but the penalty taken by John Holder ended up wide, however United remained in control with Perrett completing his hat trick and Holder scored the fifth.
North Hants Saturday Junior Cup
Just one of the North Hants Junior Cup First Round a match was played with Basingstoke Athletic beating Baughurst AFC 2-1. It was very windy at Brighton Hill and kicking with it in their favour, Athletic took the lead with a well struck 25 yard shot from Colin Davies in the tenth minute. Nathan Read hit a good chance over the bar and the home side forced plenty of corners before they went two goals ahead. It was in the 30th when Kieran Challis put away the penalty kick awarded for a foul. The Reading League side had a better second half, but could only reply the once. James Lounton did well to parry a free kick, but the Baughurst striker followed up to net.
