Old Xaverians B Team have taken a step closer to the Liverpool Old Boys League Two title having come from behind to draw with closest rivals Woolton MSB U23s.

Two first half goals for Woolton put the Old Xaverians behind, a moment of panic from the Xavs keeper gave the under 23s a penalty that was converted smartly by striker, Liam Anderson which was then followed by a nicely crafted goal that was scored by Kian Sheahan.

A fightback in the second half from the Xavs putting a lot of pressure on with set pieces as Jordan Lockett’s brace salvaged an all-important brace for the league leaders in the final minutes.

The visitors, Woolton U23’s were on the front foot from the beginning showing their flare and enthusiasm and the early pressure paid off, forcing a mistake by the Xavs’ keeper gifting an early penalty which was guided into the bottom right-hand corner.

Old Xaverians B Team struggled to get going in the first half, they were second to everything. Jack Myerscough was brilliant in the first half controlling the proceedings in midfield with calmness and composure.

A second goal came as a ball over the top was latched onto and squared in for an open goal from Kian Sheahan to calmly finish, doubling the visitors’ lead putting pressure on the Old Xaverians in the table.

Just before half-time the Xaverians came very close to getting a goal back hitting the post and missing an open goal for the rebound, but Woolton kept their 2-0 lead going in at the break.

Woolton started the second half the strongest as they did in the first half, with Luca Grivosti cutting in from the left on to his right foot and the Xaverians began to feel frustrated.

Set-pieces were the key for the home side, and Lockett managed to give his team some hope with a clinical header past the Woolton keeper delivered dangerously by Mark Allen.

Throw-ins from Alan Melia and corners from Allen and Charlie Butler proved to be essential for the Xavs as they clawed themselves back into the game.

A lot of time-wasting was the pattern for the rest of the game but in the final few moments, the Xavs were handed a penalty which was struck convincingly into the back fo the net by Lockett to get his second that puts his team in a pleasing position heading into the last three league fixtures of the season.
