Inspired by a Darren Brannigan double, Go2Day West Cheshire League Division One leaders, Maghull, put basement outfit, Ellesmere Port Town to the sword, and following Saturday's 7-2 victory, went five points clear at the top. Further efforts from Adam Brooks, Adam Hammill, Marcus Stewart and Charlie Taylor completed the statistics, with Seb Bogles and Ben Carr-Lowe on target for the hosts, WRITES ERNIE MCDONALD.
Games in hand are not always points in hand, as title rivals Newton discovered to their cost when they suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of lowly Litherland Remyca Res. on Friday evening. That result left Lee Kissock's fourth placed challengers fourteen points adrift of the leaders, and rueing they had not turned one of those games in hand into points. Reigning champions, Mersey Royal thanks to goals from Ben Ryan and Josh Ross recorded their fifth win of the season after they eclipsed Vauxhall Motors Res. 2-1. Bisensio Kamilo netted the Motormen's consolation.
Saturday's Division Two action saw current leaders, South Liverpool Res. lock horns with third placed rivals, Hooton, for the second time this season. The previous encounter produced a 0-0 stalemate but on this occasion, it was South who took the honours, Harvey Billington, Craig Byrne and Amr Badhawi finding the net in a 3-1 victory which saw the leaders open up a three point advantage. Chay Dysart was Hooton's marksman. Neston Nomads savoured a 4-0 decision over Aintree Villa Res., courtesy of efforts from Declan Roberts, Ollie Dutton, Connor Horrigan and Nathan Davidson as the hosts found themselves elevated to ninth place in the table.
Cammell Laird 1907 Res. eroded FC Kirkby's lead at the top of Division Three to four points, with the advantage of three games in hand, after Danny Page struck twice and was joined on the scoresheet by Will Bulpin in Saturday's 3-1 success at Ellesmere Port Town U23's who hit back via Emmanuel Olaitan. The same winning margin went in favour of third placed Helsby Res. at Rainhill Town Res. thanks to efforts from George Holloway, Tom Brady and Sam Telford with Jamie Casson netting for the hosts.
Mallaby's bid to claim a place in the last eight of the Cheshire County FA Amateur cup imploded at Cheshire League counterparts Egerton FC, who emerged 3-2 victors. James Fee and Tom Blacj were on the mark for the visitors.
It was smiles all round for West Cheshire clubs competing in the Runcorn & District FA Cup quarter finals, with both Runcorn Sports and local rivals, Helsby securing their passages to the last four. Runcorn's speed merchant Reece Dwyer, struck four times, with a hat trick from Stephen Rothwell and an effort from Owen Dursley confirming an 8-0 rout of FC Prospect. Helsby accounted for Victoria Park 7-0 highlighted by doubles from Lee Turkington and Joel Jones with Connor Lindsay, Jamie Hooper and Owen Kucharski also on the mark.
