The Brighouse SFL ended 2007 with a fitting tribute to Scott Davidson, Brian Nunns and Gary Priestley, as the Charity Football match in their memory produced a well attended spectacle followed by an equally well supported gathering at the Brighouse Sports Club.
The match itself was contested between Kevin O'Brien's Rastrick XI and Andy Nunns' Brighouse XI and was jam packed with goals in front of a bumper festive crowd.
Rastrick started the stronger of the two sides with Ben Timson of Sun Inn the most influential player in the opening exchanges. He set up Junctions Anthony Hemingway for the first effort in only the first minute - but Scott Nixon was equal to the opportunity in the Brighouse net.
It was Brighouse who were to take the lead however - somewhat against the run of play at the time - when Liam Smithies bundled the ball home after a goalmouth melee involving Martins Nest's leading scorer Shaun Kirby.
The Rastrickeans deservedly fought back shortly afterwards - with Timson and Hemingway again their leading lights. Timson's shot was parried by Nixon with Hemingway snapping up the rebound to equalise.
With the strong protection of the experienced Phil Williams in goal, Nigel Dare in defence and Damian Roebuck in midfield - Timson continued to enjoy an attacking role through midfield and grabbed a goal of his own to steal the lead for the first time for O'Briens side.
That was as good as it got for the side from south of the river however, as Andy Nunns' squad seemed to carry more strength in depth as they started to up the ante and pressurise their opponents. They moved into a 3-2 lead with Jason Kirby heavily involved in the two goals that swung the pendulum back in Brighouse's favour. The combative duo of Richard Dawson and Gary Ramsden in midfield were then replaced by Chris Green and the more attacking guile of Paul Moorhouse, though it was the introduction of another Thornhill Briggs man - Chris Payne - that proved to be the main catalyst for what turned out to be a comfortable Brighouse victory.
Old Pond's Michael Martin slid Payne home to register his first, before a fantastic individual effort was surely the goal of the game as Payne weaved through the Rastrick defence like statues before hammering home a great finish to the appreciation of of both sets of supporters.
Rastrick continued to probe with Rastrick CC's Anthony McDonald looking like their best route back into the game - but the like's of Triangle's leading scorer Ben Brown up front were struggling to receive the supply to get their side back into the game as Brighouse dominated. In the end it was the wily veteran Duncan Brundell who came closest to registering late on - as he nodded a McDonald corner just wide of the post.
Brighouse were now looking strong defensively with Mark Todd and Tony McKenzie of Eastfield, along with Nest's Lee Williams and Brighouse Sports captain Matthew Bagshaw dominant. It was another Sports player who extended the Brighouse sides lead. Chris Payne this time turned provider to set up Anthony Todd to fire home.
The last two goals of the game drew applause for differing reasons. Gary Ramsden grabbed Brighouse's seventh with a long ranger after good work from Payne and Moorhouse. The midfielder more known for his tackling was a popular scorer amongst supporters. Rastrick then grabbed a consolation - when Matthew Bagshaw deflected in a McDonald free kick to register a late own goal. This earnt him no end of friendly barracking particularly from the Brighouse Sports contingent both on the pitch and on the touchlines.
On the whole the match was played in a great spirit with representatives from every Brighouse SFL club joined by former players Liam Smithies, Richard Payne and Anthony Ives for what was a fitting tribute to three special characters.
The fundraising itself was also a huge success. Referee Walter Hemingway plus assistants Dave Wormald and Tahir Khan donated their match fees to the pot - with Lee Williams and Nigel Dare who were light heartedly booked during the match donating a subsequent fine to the coffers as well. Brighouse Assistant Manager Jimmy Core was also typically gung-ho with his fining system for those turning up late to add more to the pot!
Raffle tickets were sold in abundance by league Secretary John Marsden and his wife - who worked tirelessly during the day to make it a success as well as donating a hamper as a top prize themselves. Nigel Dare of Rastrick CC donated an England Rugby shirt signed by Ben Cohen, whilst Liam Smithies - a former work colleague of Scott Davidson at Redcats UK - put forward a host of prizes donated by the company.
Futher prize donations were generously put forward by the family of Gary Priestley who supported the event in good number, whilst Andy Nunns, Paul Witchell and Club Secretaries and representatives all made donations.
The raffle draw itself made in part by members of Scott, Brian and Gary's families saw most prizes claimed, but four prizes are still awaiting collection including the signed England shirt which is available to whoever can produce white ticket 181. Three further white tickets are also awaiting claiming - numbers 193, 222 and 473. If anyone can produce the tickets they can claim by calling Andy Dawson on 07890 979119.
The successful day was closed by League Vice-Chairman Duncan Brundell, who thanked Brighouse Sports Club for hosting the event and putting on food, all those who had donated raffle prizes and to all players who had paid to play in the match. The figure raised stood at over £450 at the close which will be split between the chosen charities of the British Heart Foundation and the Calderdale Special Care Baby Unit, though it is hoped with monies still to come in this could top the £500 mark.
