CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
MATCH ROUND UP W/E 14th August
Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for West Cheshire League champions Cammell Laird Reserves who went down to an opening day defeat at newly promoted Southport Trinity. The much changed Lairds outfit lost out to the tune of a 2-0 reversal with the hosts netting through Chris Pardoe and Callum Kelly. On the same evening a Lee Cairns treble spearheaded a 4-1 away victory for Willaston at Christleton. Dominic Holden added to the total while Nathan Freeman replied for the Chester outfit. Last seasons runners up West Kirby enjoyed Saturdays visit to Marine Reserves as a Paul Casey double along with strikes by Adam Lee & Rob Courtney eased them to a 4-1 win at Marine Reserves who had Liam Duff netting. Alan Schumackers first game in charge at Vauxhall Reserves pitted them against his former club. Previously known as Castrol Social the newly named Grove went down 3-0 with their old boys Sean Keevey, 2, and Mark Ryan netting for The Motormen. Heswall are another much changed side and their opening fixture ended in defeat as Tom Foley and Sam Wilkie registered in host side Maghulls 2-0 success. After 2 successive promotions Marshalls began their 1st Division campaign by sharing the spoils at Newton. Lee Welsh, Phil Davies and James Nilson struck for Marshalls while new boys Kieran Fleetwood, Nathan Mapletoft and Wayne Wardke responded for the Greasby outfit. Honours were also even when Upton AA [Danny Andrews, Paul Gloucester] entertained Helsby [Mike Smith, Adam Newbolt] while the Blacon YC v Ellesmere Port fixture had to be abandoned after 20 minutes due to a serious injury to a home player.
Hot favourites for the 2nd Division title Ashville opened with a 3-1 victory at Prescott Cables Reserves. Chris Barrow, Dave Rudge and Craig Griffiths were on target for the visitors as Steve Tames notched the reply. There were single goal successes for Capenhurst Villa [Graham Davidson] v Beb Athletic and for West Kirby Reserves [Mark Nokes] v Hale. Robert Oates and Lee Healey found the mark for Heswall Reserves against a Maghull Reserves side unable to muster a reply while Paul Fletcher netted for a Mallaby unit who also conceded an own goal in the 1-1 home draw with last seasons nearly men Chester Nomads. On Friday evening Mossley Hill Athletic and New Brighton played out a 0-0 draw.
There are no fewer than 7 new teams in Division 3 with the only successful newcomers being Helsby Reserves who had Dave Richards, Ian Cox and Paul Abram on target in the odd goal in 5 win over Upton AA Reserves. Hale Reserves [Adam Carlson] drew 1-1 at Blacon YC Reserves [Ellis Dunning] and Runcorn Linnets Reserves also gained their 1st West Cheshire League point when sharing 4 goals with Mersey Royal. The return of Merseyside Police to the League saw them go down 3-2 at home to Ellesmere Port Reserves while Beb Athletic Reserves were defeated 2-1 by Capenhurst Reserves and Marshalls Reserves went down by the same score line at the hands of Ashville Reserves. The biggest winners of the day were Mossley Hill Reserves who had James Halligan netting twice in the 5-0 win over New Brighton Reserves. In the remaining game Lloyd Ithell was a hat trick star for Manor Athletic in their 3-3 draw with Christleton Reserves.
The ever expanding Youth Division also got under way on Saturday and Jordon Lorde, 3, and Adam Wilkinson, 2, steered Maghull to a 5-1 victory over Widnes Town while new boys Millennium got the better of champions South Liverpool by the odd goal in 7.
The midweek Bill Weight semi finals brought victories for Hale, 3-2 winners at West Kirby and Southport Trinity who won a penalty shoot out 5-4 at Cammell Laird Reserves.
