CROFTON COLTS MAINTAINED THEIR QUEST FOR THREE TROPHIES BY SECURING THEIR SECOND WITH A STIRRING COMEBACK VICTORY OVER AFC VIADUCT IN THIS CHAMPIONSHIP ONE LEAGUE CUP FINAL.
Wakefield & District Sunday League - Sunday 7th April 2019.
AFC Viaduct ................................................ 2
Crofton Colts ............................................... 3
Crofton Colts lifted the first silverware of the Wakefield & District Sunday League by claiming the Championship One League Cup thanks to three second-half goals in their success over AFC Viaduct.
The Crofton outfit, who have now registered 12 consecutive wins, made a lethargic start and saw the Viaduct dominate the first half. The Viaduct striker, Ricardo Lanzito was twice denied by the Crofton Colts keeper George Bason who was forced into a parried stop before making a quick thinking save at the feet of Lanzito in the opening 10 minutes of the final.
In an isolated chance, a free kick on the right flank by Harry Turner forced a melee in the Viaduct goalmouth and saw their keeper Luke Jagger come to his sides rescue with a block on the line before the ball was cleared to safety. However, the Viaduct took a deserved lead when a Thomas Clarke’s charging run into the opponents danger area drew a rash challenge from defender Kyle McKay and saw Viaduct captain Alex Spivey fire home from the resultant spot-kick. Further missed chances by the dominant Viaduct outfit in this half was to prove costly.
Crofton Colts showed more determination and drive in the second-half and surged into a 3-1 lead inside 20 minutes of the restart. In the 51st minute, Ryan Batty found Harry Turner with a pass across the danger zone which saw Turner adjust his footing before unleashing a low drive across the keeper to find target and the equaliser.
Minutes later, a double-blast inside a six minute spell saw Ryan Batty twice rattle the Viaduct crossbar with tremendous efforts which saw Gareth Whitehall and Adam Swift pounce on the rebounds to score respectively with excellent efforts to make it 3-1.
Viaduct pulled a goal back with a tremendous 40 yards drive from their majestic captain Alex Spivey which arrowed in into the top corner of the net for his brace of the match but his side could not dent the Crofton Colts dream of a treble as they held on for success.
The Championship One League Cup was presented to the Crofton Colts captain Lewis Hughes by League Officer of the Wakefield & District Sunday League, Steve Mercer.
The man of the match award, sponsored by Pennine Trophies and the Matchball, sponsored by Kings Head (Pollington) went to AFC Viaduct midfielder George Whittaker.
