Hampshire Junior A Cup Second Round
It was exit for two of the four Basingstoke Saturday League clubs who played in the Second Round of the Hampshire Junior a Cup, as fancied Hook and Winklebury Wizards fell to outside opposition. Herriard Sports however have received a walkover as their opponents Cherry Bees could not raise a team.
Hook travelled to the top Andover League club Broughton and came home defeated 2-1, but losing their young full back Morgan Davies in the 40th minute, sent off for two yellow cards did not help. It was however a close game and in the early stages Hook should have gone ahead when a good cross from Dan Mauridian fell to Jon Noakes, it looked a golden chance, but over the bar it went and then in the 30th minute they fell behind. It was no fault of keeper Greg Archer who did well to stop the header, but was unable to keep the rebound out. Hook came back strongly in the second half, even though under strength and Mauridian missed the post by a whisker and later Dan Mellors hit the bar, but in a counter attack Broughton made it 2-0 in the 70th. Hook kept plugging away, but could only reply with a free kick taken by James Neville that eluded the packed six-yard box, including the keeper.
Winklebury Wizards played Fleet Spurs A away and were beaten 6-3. They had a great start by taking the lead after ten minutes when a pass from Aaron Barton found George Lagden who finished well. Confusion in defence between Ben Evans and stand in keeper Ben Scott, led to an open goal to level the scores, but back came Wizards to regain the lead when Lagden scored again with a half volley after being set up by a Greg Adams lob. Lagden missed a great chance to score his hat trick and Matt King had a half chance before Fleet equalised following a long throw not dealt with and they then went in front in the 40th. Early in the second half Fleet made it 4-2, but back came Wizards to score again through Joe Lake. Wizards were unable to make any impression after this and concede another two goals.
On the plus side Tadley Calleva A had a very easy win, beating top Aldershot league club Traco Athletic, who boasted a 100% record until this Hampshire Club tie. The Tadley club were very disappointed with the facilities where there were no showers or toilets, but they put on their best performance of the season by winning 7-1 with Peter White scoring six times. Tadley were not at full strength and Manager Bradley Nash had to play from the start at full back. It took them twenty minutes to open their account when White put away a cross from Jason Graham and this was quickly followed by his second, this time Stephen Burgess with the assist. White put through Graham who made it 3-0 and when Graham was brought down, White netted a penalty for five goal interval lead. White added another soon after half time and then Traco netted their lone reply. By the 60th minute White had scored his sixth and after this Tadley had an easy afternoon holding their big lead.
Twentyten entertained IOW visitors Sandown Reserve and are through to Round Three after beating them 6-1. It was the Islanders who had the better start and went ahead in the 16th minute and also hit the post soon after. In the 20th the equaliser came when Ryan Lupton was pulled back when through on goal and the resulting penalty was netted by Joe Hill. It took the home side until the 40th minute to go in front. Joe Osborne with the cross and Lupton was at the near post to net. Twentyten really should have scored more and in the second half they did. Lupton squared the ball back for Hill to make it 3-1 and Lupton added the fourth after playing a one two with Lucas Pickett. Lupton and Christian Cox combined to put Hill through for his hat trick, but two good saves by keeper Harry Nash kept the advantage with Twentyten, who went on score another through the hardworking James Arnold, with an assist from Craig Atkinson.
Hampshire Junior B Cup Second Round.
AFC Berg had comfortable 4-0 win against Longdog Soldiers to go through to the Third Round of the Hampshire Junior B Cup. Although they were under some pressure in the first half, the Longdog defence did well to hold out and it was not until the 54th minute when they eventually managed to score their opener. It came when Ash Elward was brought down and Carlos Gonzales put away the penalty kick. Ten minutes later Paul Crow made it 2-0 with a bullet header following a corner kick and then wave after wave attacks, late goals came via Elward and Kieran Alleyne.
The other Hants B Cup tie was postponed between Sherborne Saints and Durley Reserves and is put back on for this Saturday. If it called of again through the weather, the match will be transferred to Bournemouth.
Peter Raynbird Cup Quarter Final
One of the Peter Raynbird Cup Quarter Finals was played off and it is Division Two Somesay through to the last four after beating Chineham 4-1 at the Everest School pitch. The Chineham camp felt it was a closer game than the score suggests and had their early goal scored by Jordon Davies not been disallowed for handball, they might have done better. It was however Somesay who led in the 25th minute when Jack Roach ran through to ball from Harry Knapp to score. In the 40th came the second when Luke Gore beat his man and then the keeper after good run into the six-yard box. Roach scored again early in the second half and by the 59th minute Chineham were four goals adrift when Roach completed his hat trick following a pass from Barry McQuigan. It was then Chineham went on attack having more of the game, but they could only manage the one goal, a fine volley from Tommy Collingridge that ended into the top corner of the net.
