Kenson secure victory in extra time

Haver Town F.C. 1 Kenson F.C. 2 aet

Kenson needed extra time to win the Division Three League Cup Final, with a goal worthy of winning any final.

The game itself was not a thriller as both sides struggled to gain any supremacy.

Haver dominated the first 20 minutes, Courtney Waller created the first opportunity of note where Ben Green in the Kenson goal was called upon to save smartly.

Ben McAlister then shot wide.

It was not until the 20th minute before Kenson created anything of note when a header from the right was headed over. 5 minutes later much against the run of play they took the lead. A free kick midway in the Haver half was floated into the penalty area which found Afam Green totally unmarked to flick a header into the net.

It only took Haver 7 minutes to restore parity the dangerous Lee Harris crossed for Waller whose first effort looked to have been dealt with, however Green fumbled allowing Waller to hammer home.

Just before half time Rob Smethurst was presented with a glorious opportunity to put Kenson back in front however a great double save by Tom Richardson ensured both sides went in level at the break

Both sides struggled to gain any acendency in the second half and opportunities were limited.

Neither side managed to trouble the keepers as both defences stood strong. James Dickinson at the heart of the Kenson defence had an outstanding game.

The game drifted and many of the pundits in the ground predicted that extra time was inevitable and so it proved as the game finished level after 90 minutes.

Joe Montague saw an effort smartly saved by Green in the Kenson goal. Just before the end of the first half of extra time Smethurst was hauled down on the edge of the box. Up stepped Dave Shelley to bury the free kick into the goal to restore Kenson's advantage.

This time they were determined to hang on, and in the second period of extra time should have put the game to bed as Cook missed to great opportunities.

Haver tried their best to secure an equaliser but to no avail as the Witham side held out to lift the trophy
