For the second time in three seasons, Carlisle based Crown Newlaithes won The Cumbria Women’s League Cup, this time at The Sheepmount on Sunday 11 May 2014.

With the Under 16 Girls League Cup Finals taking place there was plenty of quality female football on display during the afternoon.

Crown Newlaithes overcame Carlisle City to set up a Final appearance against title chasing Workington Reds Ladies. The Reds beat last season’s League Cup winners Abbeytown WFC in Round 1 and Barrow Celtic FC in the semi-final.

Once the formalities were over, the officials got the game underway. The game started evenly with both teams working hard to restrict any chances. The breakthrough came on 38 minutes, Becky Scott scoring a 25 yard volley for Workington Reds. Newlaithes equalised just before half time with the league top scorer Alison McCorry finishing from the edge of the box from a Carly Stevenson cross.

The teams went in at half time all square. Both teams started brightly in the second half with chances at both ends. Newlaithes took the lead with 25 minutes to go, Chez Brierley found the back of the net with a shot from 30 yards that looped over Workington Red’s keeper.

The Carlisle based team made it 3-1 five minutes later, Paige Williams playing the ball through for Lily Gaulton to slot the ball past the keeper.

As the game went on, the sunshine disappeared and the rain started making it more difficult for the players. Workington Reds were pushing players forward to find a way back into the game and had a number of half chances to pull one back; but Newlaithes stayed strong.

With 5 minutes remaining, Crown Newlaithes put the game out of reach of the Reds, Vic Metcalfe crossing for Gaulton to volley into the net at the near post to make it 4-1.

The final whistle blew and Crown Newlaithes celebrated their second League Cup Win. Cumbria Women’s League would like to congratulate the victorius Crown Newlaithes team; Workington Red LFC played their part in an entertaining game.
