WORCESTER LEAGUE ROUND UP 7th May and 8th May 2011

A remarkable comeback from ten men KGV Worcester saw them lift the Worcester League Bernard Finnegan Cup with a 3-2 win against VBL Sports. KGV goalkeeper Jamie Lambert was sent off after only four minutes of the match and when VBL went 2-0 up through John Edwards and Neil Taverner, the game seemed over. However two goals from Craig Selby and a Nathan Owen penalty sealed an unlikely victory for KGV.

Coppertops Athletic are the champions of the Sunday Division One. They clinched the title with a 3-2 win at Northwick Vale. Matt Hannant scored twice with Richard Millard grabbing a last minute winner. Shane Smith bagged two as AFC Mazak returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win at Martley Spurs Reserves. They will take the runners-up spot if they win their last two matches. Hallow Village are still in the promotion frame, Jamie Lawrence cracking a hat-trick and Chris White adding a brace as they crushed Malvern Radar 6-2. Elsewhere goals from Simon Hands and Gary Skyrme gave Blue Star a 2-1 home win over HDNL Sports.

In Division 2 Marcus Cooke hit a hat-trick for Wessie who won 3-1 at Blackpole Sports. Despite losing 5-3 at Hallow, where Graham Henman bagged two for the home team, AFC West Midland have gained promotion from Division 3 as AFC Brewers could only draw 1-1 with Wychbold RBL Reserves. David Perreira notched a double for VFC Keyz who drew 3-3 with Cutnall Green. Rick Holloway and Dean Ballard were on target for Worcester City Wanderers in their 2-1 Division 4 victory over Worcester Lynx.

On Saturday VBL Sports beat Powick 3-2 to keep the title race alive but must rely on Powick dropping at least a point if they are to overtake them in their remaining three matches. Meanwhile Chris Parker fired a treble and Mike Roskans and Matt Wren both a double as Newtown Sports won 8-0 at Worcester Anchors. Mark Winters netted twice in Hallow’s 5-1 success against Worcester Raiders.

WORCESTER LEAGUE ROUND UP 30th April and 1st May 2011

Arrow 2000 are the new holders of the Worcester League Katherine Rayer Cup. They beat Martley Spurs 2-1 to land the trophy for the first time in their history. After a goal-less first half, the match turned after the interval when Martley’s Luke Whittington was sent off for a two footed lunge on an opponent. Lee Seldon then gave Arrow the lead before Adam Harris equalised. Gary Price scored the winner for Arrow ten minutes from time.

AFC West Midland took a step nearer promotion to Division 2 with a 4-3 win at nearest rivals AFC Brewers. Their goals came from Mike Jeffries, Dan Kellegher, Tom Hill and Ben Trainer. Meanwhile champions Inter Express won 5-4 at Malvern Victoria, Tom Bethell hitting a hat-trick.

In the Premier Division Richard Congrave scored twice as Upton Snodsbury beat Crowle 4-1. There were doubles for Paul Bennett and Elliot King as CMB Sports won 4-1 against Perrywood. AFC Mazak’s bid for promotion from Division One has hit the rocks lately and they went down 4-3 at bottom of the table HDNL Sports. Ethan Williams bagged two for HDNL as did Phil Page for Mazak. Fellow challengers Hallow Village and New AFC Barbourne drew 1-1.

AA Chequers enhanced their Division 2 promotion prospects with a 5-3 win at VBL Sports. Kevin Ginger cracked a hat-trick for Chequers with Neil Taverner bagging two for VBL. Leaders KGV Worcester hammered Droitwich RBL 10-0, Craig Selby netting six times and Nathan Owen twice. Elsewhere there were doubles for Alan Parkinson of Wessie who beat AFC Claines 3-0 and Tim Martin in Hornets 4-0 win at Blackpole. In Division 4 Alex Scullion netted four times as Malvern Rangers won 5-1 against Hangover. A Paul Quorrol strike gave Droitwich Spa Eagles Reserves victory over Powick B. Chris Newman found the net four times and Danny Burne Added a brace as leaders VBL Sports Reserves thrashed Worcester City Wanderers 8-1.

The Saturday Division title may well be decided when Powick meet VBL Sports next Saturday. Andy Martin, Mark White and Ricky Buckland all scored twice in Powick’s 7-1 victory over Worcester Anchors whilst VBL beat Hallow 3-1. Ashley Palmer netted four times as West Malvern TC crushed YM Rangers 7-0 and Shaun Smith bagged two in Malvern Rangers 3-1 home win against Northway.
