FARSLEY’S FAULTLESS FINAL SHOW

YORKSHIRE OLD BOYS SHIELD FINAL, 2018/19, Farsley Celtic Jnrs 6 Horsforth St. Margaret’s 1

Farsley Celtic ended the season on a winning note, with a convincing victory over Horsforth St. Margaret’s to win the Old Boys Shield for the second season running. A good game, and in the words of referee Damian Edge, ‘’ A pleasure to referee a cup final consisting of two sides who provided us with some quality football & sportsmanship throughout the 90 minutes, both teams a credit to the League and the competition’’. Thanks today to Damian, his assistants, Chris Moore & Kevin Smith along with 4th official, Nick Britcliffe.
Farsley, excellent in midfield early, Horsforth decent defensively, and a couple of good stops from their keeper prevented an early opener for Farsley. For Horsforth St. Margaret’s, failure to take the opportunities they created proved costly. Gregg Rowell shot just wide with half an hour played then the 1st goal came on 36 minutes. From a long ball, Tom Ormondroyd headed back across goal finding an unmarked Said Osman, who side footed into an empty net. Horsforth tried for the rest of the half but couldn’t find an equaliser. Rowell had another chance near the break but keeper Jordan Wright saved his tame effort.... HT, 1-0 Farsley.
Second half and 6 more goals to come, all scored by players in the blue of Farsley.!!! Two early strikes in the half put Farsley in command, commencing with 48th minute Danny Lyons run into the box & a powerful shot under the keeper. The prolific striker was on the scoresheet again just 5 minutes later. Farsley substitute, Louis Surtees first touch of the ball, a shot struck the post, rebounded to Lyons who couldn’t miss from 3 yards out !! 3-0 down and the Horsforth heads went down a little, but they picked themselves back up, and as in the 1st half, put in plenty of effort but lacking in the final third. Louis Surtees gave Farsley a four goal advantage on the hour with a shot from 15 yards out into the bottom corner. After 67 minutes it was 5-0.... The Horsforth defence went to sleep allowing Andy Shields a relatively easy chance which was duly converted. The game was virtually over, it didn’t look like Horsforth were going to score but they did !!!... Courtesy of a bizarre OG A speculative shot struck the bar, came out to defender Tom Ormondroyd. his header back looped over keeper Jordan wright and gave Horsforth their consolation goal. Another one from Louis Surtees a couple of minutes from time made it 6-1.
Horsforth St. Margaret’s were gracious in defeat, applauding Farsley, and in the words of player Joe Clapham, ‘’they were a different class, especially second half’’
Congratulations to Farsley Celtic Jnrs....... 2018/19 ‘’double winners’’, Premiership & Yorkshire Old Boys Shield
Finally, my thanks to St. Bedes O.B. for providing the facility for the final plus after match hospitality.
