Suiting Up For Cancer Research: Mersey Harps’ Story on Cup Final Day
The 18th of May was a huge day for a number of teams competing in a variety of Liverpool Old Boys Amateur League Cup Finals.
Collegiate OB were to take on ACOL FC in the first final of the day in the Connerty Cup, followed by Mersey Harps Seconds vs BRNESC FC in the Centenary Cup, with the last fixture being St Margarets OB vs MSB Woolton for the Centenary Trophy.
But it was all eyes on Mersey Harps Seconds, as their managerial team of Daniel McGonigle, Terry McCann and Aaron Corey showed up in full suits, accompanied by electric green ties.
They were suited and booted in the name of Cancer Research, as a few months prior, they found out that ex-player, Phil Williamson’s wife Cheryl, had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Being a club massive on community spirit and togetherness, McGonigle decided to ask if they could do something as a club to show their support.
Mersey Harps Seconds played out a great game but lost to BRNESC 3-1 in the end, although the result was arbitrary on a day where regardless of the score, the Harps had undoubtedly achieved something great.
Mr. Williamson, speaking shortly after the full-time whistle, said: “It was quite emotional for me and Cheryl- obviously with people thinking about you and your situation.”
The team’s Manager, McGonigle, said: “We thought that we wanted to do something as a club and we never really got round to it with the season being busy, and then we just said ‘look, cup final, what better way to do it?’ Let’s create a bit of a buzz about it.
“If one good thing can come out of today it's that. It’s just about being a club.”
As of 10 days after the cup final day, the GoFundMe has comfortably surpassed its target of £500, reaching an amazing £1,170, for a great cause.
