CARLSBERG WEST CHESHIRE AFL
MATCH ROUNDUP W/E 19th FEBRUARY 2011

The semi finals beckoned for Saturday’s Pyke Cup contestants with the closest contest taking place at Newton where the hosts emerged victorious by the odd goal in 7. Steve Finlay, Simon Andrews and Steve McGowan were on target for opponents Upton AA but Newton were able to go one better thanks to strikes by Anthony Brown, John Paul Stanhope, Kieran Fleetwood and Jamie Hannah. League form meant little as Southport Trinity bowed out of the competition on the strength of a 3-1 defeat inflicted by Williston. Oliver Steadman, James Jones and Josh Williams were the goal scoring heroes for the visitors as Kevin Kirkpatrick responded for Trinity. Maghull had matters more or less to their liking as they ran out 3-0 winners over Christleton courtesy of Tom Foley, Brad Smart and Ryan Stamper. The remaining tie featuring Ellesmere Port and Heswall was postponed.
West Kirby were representing Cheshire FA in the Northern Counties Senior Championship and reached the final thanks to a 1-0 victory over Knaresborough Town of the West Riding FA. A physical encounter provided opportunities for both sides with the all important goal arriving in the 36th minute when Dave Forbes forced the ball home following Paul Connelly’s knocked down header. Blacon YC continue to struggle and in Saturday’s only Division 1 fixture went down to a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of a Helsby outfit who had Lewis Buckley and Mike Whitehead registering
Division 2 leaders Ashville strengthened their position at the top by overcoming Maghull Reserves 4-1. Dave Rudge, Dave Huyton, Chris Barrow and Ross Rule obliged for the Wallasey outfit with an own goal counting for the visitors. Heswall Reserves [Mike Hughes, Gordon Harrison, Dave Swaine] eased to a 3-0 victory over Hale while New Brighton had a similar sized victory over basement boys Bronze Social thanks to a double from Kyle Birch and a single from Jay Clare. Capenhurst Villa Reserves grabbed a welcome point when playing out a 0-0 draw at Bebington Athletic.
There were goals aplenty in Division 3 where Runcorn Linnets Reserves joined disengaged leaders Manor Athletic on 40 points after a narrow 3-2 win over New Brighton Reserves. Jack Webb, Pete Murphy and Dave Jolley obliged for Linnetts with Liam Jameson grabbing a brace for New Brighton. Third placed Marshalls Reserves [Dave Powell, Gary Powell, Ian Lewis] had to be content with a share of the spoils following a 3-3 draw with Ellesmere Port Reserves [Ben Smith, 2, Sam McLeod] while Christleton Reserves had doubles from Dan Page and Ryan Abraham as they recorded a 5-3 success over Merseyside Police who also had a 2 goal man in Tony Hill. Helsby Reserves [Lee Fitzmaurice, Ian Cox] shared 4 goals with Mersey Royal [Ali Major, 2,] while Ashville Reserves [Andy Kingham, 2, James Locke] triumphed by the odd goal in 5 at Bebington Athletic Reserves [Wayne Hulse, Craig Webb].
Hale Reserves Liverpool Junior cup journey is over after they went down 2-1 to Liverpool North with Paul Hart netting for Hale. Another side making a cup exit were Halewood Town Youth who were on the wrong end of a 6-1 scoreline against Marine Youth. Halewood’s consolation was claimed by Andy Bird. Only 2 games took place in the Youth Division with 2nd placed Hale being grateful for Adam Finnegan’s solitary strike in their narrow success at Runcorn Town while table toppers Maghull had Adam Wilkinson,2, and Mike Cummins on target as they eased to a 3-0 win at Helsby.
