Matchday Report

Three of this week’s scheduled matches were lost during the week to heavy rain, leaving only two that survived.

The League matches between Oyster Reserves and Langham Lodgers and Stanway Athletic Reserves and Ramsey & Mistley Reserves went as did yet again the outstanding Charlie Pullen Memorial League Knock Out Cup game between Parkeston Welfare Park and Sporting Rebels, which has now been re-scheduled for next Saturday.

Of the games that did survive Ramsey & Mistley 1st XI took on Mersea Island Reserves at Furze Hills with an earlier 2.30 pm kick off. Ramsey who were second at the start of the day could go joint top with leaders Oyster Reserves if they won against the bottom side Mersea Island Reserves, and duly obliged with a 6-2 victory. They remain in second spot with a seven goal inferior goal difference but crucially still have two games in hand over the leaders.

Christopher Stratton opened the scoring for Ramsey drilling the ball home from a Thomas Simpson through ball, and added a second volleying home a Ben Allington cross to give Ramsey a 2-0 half time lead. Ben Allington netted the Ramsey third after latching on to a Stratton lofted pass over the Mersea defence, firing home with his weaker right foot. Stratton sealed his hat trick when Thomas Simpson produced the pass of the game, bending the ball round the back of the Mersea defence and into his path, for him to slot past the Mersea keeper. Mersea pulled a goal back for a 4-1 score line; before Simpson poked the ball home following a goal mouth scramble to give Ramsey a 5-1 lead. Mersea then added their second goal of the game with a header at the back post, before Ashley Finch converted a Chris Stratton cross to complete the scoring and a 6-2 victory Ramsey. The Mersea goal scorers were Josh Whiting and substitute Reece Fulwood.

The other game that survived was Tollesbury Reserves against Abbey Fields, although to get played this game was switched to the Abbey Fields home venue of Birch Park earlier in the week, and it was Abbey Fields that came out the winners 7-1 after leading 2-1 at the break. On their score sheet it was Donnell Henry with a hat trick, an Ollie Macdonald brace, one from the evergreen Charlie Wood and a Peter Harvey penalty. Netting the Tollesbury consolation was Toby Hume.
