Report for Week Ending Saturday 25.01.2020

Six games were scheduled this week, the four First Round Charlie Pullen Memorial League Knock Out Cup, and two League matches. The four Cup games featured the League leaders Sporting Rebels at home at Plough Corner against mid table Mersea Island Reserves, however this game was postponed on Friday due to a waterlogged pitch. Second placed Oyster Reserves visited Thurstable School, Tiptree to play another mid table side in Tiptree Engaine ‘A’, and went safely through by a 4-0 score line after leading 1-0 at the break. On their score sheet it was, Daniel Rampton with a hat trick and one from substitute Ethan Ward. The tie of the round on paper pitched fifth placed Abbey Fields hosting the third placed side, the Ramsey & Mistley 1st XI at Birch Park, with Ramsey going through by the odd goal in seven, with a 4-3 victory. In the other tie the Ramsey & Mistley Reserve side also went through at the expense of Stanway Athletic Reserves at Philip Morant School. Ramsey took the lead on twenty minutes when Luke Byrne drove into the Stanway box at pace before being brought down from behind and with Gary Merchant converting the resulting penalty. With just two minutes of the half remaining Liam Winter made inroads through the middle before playing the ball out to Peter Wilson on the left wing and his cross volleyed home at the back post by Gary Merchant to give Ramsey a 2-0 half time lead. In the close first half Stanway hit the bar and had another effort cleared of the line. Stanway did get a goal back in the second period, however in the last minute Liam Winter carried out a double tackle before playing Peter Wilson through to score in this hard fought game.

On the League front fourth placed Langham Lodgers were looking to close the arrears on the top three teams who were all involved in Cup action when they visited fourth from bottom Stoke by Nayland at Webbs Meadow, Nayland. Langley duly won scoring netting nine goals without reply to move back into third spot just two points behind the leaders. On their score sheet were James Whitnell with a double hat trick, Barry Sage, Daniel Stevens and substitute James Burridge. The other League game saw the bottom side Tollesbury Reserves host the side immediately above them Parkeston Welfare Park at the Victory Recreation Ground in Tollesbury. Parkeston took the lead on twenty eight minutes when their centre half missed his header allowing Daniel Tweed to flick the ball home. A minute later it was back to all square as Toby Hume played in Reece Willmott to score. With neither side able to trouble the score line any further in the half the score line at break was 1-1. Tollesbury stepped up a gear and just two minutes after the restart were in front as Patrick Gilbert hit home a thirty yard free kick. Nine minutes late in the fifty sixth minute substitute Will Butcher controlled a corner before volleying home. free kick. It was soon 4-1 to Tollesbury as Louis Pipe was allowed to turn inside the box before shooting home. There was still time for another substitute to add his name to Tollesbury score sheet as Ryan Bentley hit home from the edge of the six yard box to give Tollesbury a5-1 victory and in the process move up two places of the bottom to leave the visitors supporting the rest of the league at the bottom.
