Matchday Report

Report for Week Ending Saturday 21.12.2019

Only one game survived the weather, and was played this week; the other four scheduled fixtures were all lost to unplayable pitches.

With the top three sides, Oyster Reserves, Sporting Rebels and Langham Lodgers all without any action, it was a chance for the fourth placed team, Abbey Fields, to take closer order at the top as they were facing lower placed opposition. The fifth placed side, the Ramsey & Mistley 1st XI were also without a game

Abbey Fields, fourth from top, hosted the fourth from bottom side Mersea Island Reserves, and in an even first half with both sides unable to find the final telling pass the closest any team came to scoring was when Peter Harvey for Abbey bent his free kick around the Mersea wall and with their goal keeper beaten, saw his shot hit the post. The second half followed much the same pattern of play, but with Mersea looking stronger with their use of roll on, roll off substitutions finally stole the points when Matt Capon struck home from inside the area with just eight minutes left, to give Mersea a 1-0 lead which they comfortably held onto until the final whistle.

As this is the last weekend of matches before the Christmas and the New Year break, on behalf of the Colchester and East Essex Football League, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Football will return again in the New Year, on Saturday 04th January, with a full schedule of League games.
